Our introduction to Haiti came through our daughters. This is what warms our hearts the most. As cousins, our girls signed up for a high school ministry trip - one as a leader, the other as a student. We hoped this would grow their relationships both with God and one another. It turns out that this high school mission trip would plant a seed in our family that years later just continues to grow. The girls developed hearts for Haiti and they returned from the trip with a love for the people of Leogane and the children of Lott Carey, that they were eager to share.
After learning some lessons in trust and God’s timing, a year later we were able to experience Haiti firsthand as sisters, alongside our daughters. We were captivated by God’s presence in the country. The Haitians we met were people of great faith and tangible joy, despite the many obstacles and hardships they faced. It was our honor and pleasure to serve them and our time spent there was a true gift. We returned home sharing a love for Haiti with our daughters and committed to telling the story of our friends there whose struggles are real and needs are great.
As a family, we are able to sponsor some of the students we met and team up with the board of Haiti Kids School to find ways to offer continued support to our Haitian friends. A return trip was planned for March 2020 with additional family members in tow. It was to be an opportunity for three generations of us to serve alongside one another and we were excited about the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ. However, for a second time, God’s timing did not align with our scheduled itinerary and we were unable to make the trip. Sidelined again, our trust in God is unwavering and our resolve to return has been deepened. We remain here at home with great love in our hearts for our dear friends in Haiti.
