FAQs

  • What is the cost to sponsor a child?

About $1 per day. $35 / month to sponsor one child.

  • What percentage of my gift actually goes to kids in Haiti at Lott Carey?

Haiti Kids School is run by volunteers and one part-time staff. We incur minimal fees such as accepting credit card payments, fees with wiring money to Haiti, and some minor software fees that allow us to manage our information and donation systems. Approximately 95% of all donations go directly to Haiti Kids School.

  • When I sponsor a student, how is the money used?

Because this school serves some of the poorest children in this region of Haiti, all financial donations go into the general fund to help feed/educate all the children at Lott Carey School. Sponsoring a student helps the child stay in school. It helps ensure he/she has the required uniform, learning materials, and a healthy meal each day at school. There are occasions where a specific donation is made (e.g. Please provide emergency food to the families of the school / Please buy my sponsor child a new uniform / Please build a classroom for the 9th grade students) where that funding goes directly to that specific need. While movement of money to Haiti for specific reasons is difficult and at times quite expensive, we have been able to manage over 90% of the specific requests made. Otherwise, all other funds go into the general feeding / education / healthcare needs of the children.

  • Are there fees related to credit card and debit card transactions?

All credit and debit card transactions incur an additional administrative fee to cover the cost of the merchant fees charged by PayPal and DonorView. We've applied for the lowest rates possible for a 501C3 for these and have been approved.

  • How do I make changes to my auto-donation?

If you've set this up through PayPal, simply log into your own PayPal Account and make the changes. If you followed the steps on our Donation Page , simply repeat the steps to schedule a new donation amount/frequency, and email info@haitikidsschool.com or call 952-856-0805 to confirm your updated donation schedule to ensure you do not get double charged.

  • Can I correspond with my student?

Yes! We encourage you to write letters and send photos to our team to be delivered to your student. Letters and photos can be emailed to info@haitikidschool.com anytime of the year.

  • How long are students sponsored?

We ask for a one year commitment, which enables the child to successfully complete a grade level in school. It is our hope that sponsorship would continue beyond one year. Sponsorship can be modified at any time by contacting our office.

  • What happens to my sponsorship if my student leaves Haiti Kids School?

Our team works quickly to transfer your sponsorship to another waiting student. Should this happen, we’ll be in touch with a name, photo, and bio for you, as well as an opportunity to write your student introducing yourself and send a photo if you wish.

  • How long have Pastor Saul and Lott Carey Church & School been serving the community?

Pastor Saul came to Lott Carey Church in 1982 and began his involvement with the school in 1987. Lott Carey School was officially established in 1988. Lott Carey Church has been serving the community since 1963 and received legal recognition in 1965.

  • How many students/staff?

In 2024, enrollment was approximately 586 students and 93 staff.

  • When do they attend school?

School begins at 8 am and students end their day around noon when it gets too hot. Importantly, students receive one meal per day when they are at school. Often this is the only meal that day they will receive.

  • What do they learn at school?

They learn French, English, math, science, and music.

  • What is the school building like?

The school walls are built from concrete blocks covered in cement; the roof is constructed of wooden frames covered in corrugated metal; the gates, doors, and fences are made of metal. There is a well onsite for drawing water, there is a room in the back of the building for cooking meals, and there is a courtyard area. The classrooms contain chalkboards, long wooden benches, and desks or long narrow tables for writing surfaces. The long benches fit an impressive number of students!

Thanks to the generosity of donors, in 2020-2021 additional classrooms were constructed on a second level, making it possible to expand the school from Pre-K to 8th grade to Pre-K through high school graduation!

  • Do they eat lunch at school?

As a result of sponsorship, children receive one meal a day. Often this is the only meal these children will receive, making this a critical element of our program.

  • Do the kids wear uniforms?

Yes. Your donations allow students to acquire the proper uniform associated with their learning level. Students are extremely grateful to have these uniforms; they take special care of them and wear them with dignity. Having these uniforms removes the stress of having to use family resources for school clothing and allows the students to focus on learning.

  • Are gifts to Haiti Kids School tax deductible?

Haiti Kids School is a tax exempt nonprofit organization under 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code; we are qualified to receive tax deductible donations and all donations are deductible as allowed by law.
